RUSH
by Southpaw Dance Company

produced by Pinwheel as part of Journeys Festival

Pinwheel’s Director, Katy, fell in love with Southpaw Dance Company’s powerful production RUSH as an audience member when she saw its first outing in South Shields in 2015. As a programmer she then brought it to Hull City of Culture in 2017 in partnership with Freedom Festival. Finally, director Robby Graham asked Katy to work with him and the creative team to update and remount Rush in Leicester in 2021.

This spectacular, visceral, large-scale outdoor work was inspired by the mass movement of global protest. Told through the lens of five local characters, RUSH examines the daily frustrations that move us to effect change, offering dance, music, and the power of vibrant, cultural protest as a voice to express those struggles.

The piece is updated each time it is presented to reflect local issues which will resonate with the audience, and to work with a new cast of local participants and dance captains.
